Earlier this summer i was contacted by one of my Burlesque and pin up idols, Anna Fur Laxis.  As well as being the face of so many massive vintage reproduction companies.  She is the hottest burlesque performer!  She is famed for her axe throwing.  I saw her perform for the first time at the Gilded Merkin in July, she was amazing!

Voted No. 5 in the world in the "Burlesque Top 50" and placing First Runner Up in both the 2011 Milan Burlesque Awards and "Miss Exotic World" at the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas, the industry's highest regarded awards ceremony, Anna has performed Burlesque across the globe in locations including the UK, Los Angeles, Paris, Rome, Zurich, Brussels, Tokyo, Barcelona, Helsinki, Milan, Chicago, Las Vegas, New York, San Francisco, Melbourne & Sydney. Her modelling credits include work for high profile retro/vintage clothing & accessories companies, and the covers of numerous magazines.(source)

Anna got in contact with me after being recommended by Miss Rain, who i am eternally grateful for.  Anna already had the gorgeous fabric, eight meters which she got from a fabric store in LA.  She had lots of ideas on how she wanted the dress too look.  I love working on burlesque costumes, they are a chance to be really creative.  Its also a fun challenge to figure out a way for the garments to be removed in the most sexy way possible! ;)

The dress also had to be designed to conceal what she was wearing under neath.  And to find out what is underneath her gown, make sure you catch her perform her new act live.  With a name like "showgirl assassin" its gonna be good and i have a feeling weapons will be involved!

Bete Noire Jewellery

Since i started my business, I have always wanted a clutterfly double heart necklace based on my logo.

When Clutterfly went out of business earlier this year, it was sad to see such an iconic and successful brand disappear.  But recently i started to notice allot of buzz on the interweb about Bete Noire.  I was very curious to find out more about them as they were very very similar to Clutterfly.  I initially thought it was another impostor, but after a bit of digging around (i read the about me section on their website) i found out that it was the designer and maker, Beth from Clutterfly.  Who had now decided to run the business solo.  I quickly contacted her and enquired about my custom necklace and after she showed me a pic on instagram as to what she had made.  i loved it and placed the order.  it only took about a week from initial enquiry to me actually wearing it around my neck.  Now that's top customer service!

You can either order designs directly from the shop or have a complete custom order.  Best way to do this is have a browse on their website.  Have a look at the options, heart colour, sparkle, print, banner.  Or you can drop her an email.  Here are a few of the ready made ones i love!

Mother of the Bride

Photo by Dave Nunn Wedding Photography

I made all ten of Ferns brides maid dresses, which i blogged about here.  I also made the mother of the Bride dress for her mum Janice.  The dress was initially going to be for Ladies Day at Ascot, which Fern and all her lovely ladies went to as a part of her many hen nights.  But once the ideas started to flow she wanted this dress to be for the big day.  The most important dress in a woman's life is her wedding dress, the second most important dress is the dress she wears to her child's wedding.  I felt more pressure making this dress than i did all ten brides maid dresses put together!

The idea for this dress was very much lead by the fabric.  After going through my fabric sample book with both Fern and her mum, we chose the fabrics and lace.  Then i designed the dress around them.  It is very much inspired by a dress Marilyn Monroe wore, that very dress was for sale in the Vintage shop i worked at in London, The Girl Can't Help it.  I would spend many hours gazing at the dress in the shop, imagining what it would have been like on the lady herself.

The dress was a coffee coloured satin pencil skirt wiggle dress, over laid with exquisite cream cored lace.  I used the same coffee satin as a waist sash as i am a firm believer that the waist should be emphasised when ever possible.

I got in touch with B Millinery, who made a beautiful bespoke hat using the same coffee satin and cram lace as the dress.

A Turquoise Prom pt 1

A few weeks ago I was working on two turquoise prom dresses in the studio.

Here is Ellie's prom dress ;

Turquoise satin bodice was over laid with gathered tulle in a slightly contrasting jade colour.  An exquisite heavily jewelled waist band was sew in on by hand. Flattering sweat heart neckline.

Jade tulle also over laid the elegant floor length skirt, wish added movement and dimension to to gown.  Picture below shows the fine seam in the tulle.

Steel boning was used to support the strapless bodice.

Close up details of the beaded waist band.
